Subhankar Banerjee

Banerjee Portrait Subhankar Banerjee founded in August 2010. Subhankar is an Indian–born American photographer, writer, and activist. Over the past decade he has worked tirelessly for the conservation of ecoculturally significant areas of the Arctic, and to raise awareness about indigenous human rights and climate change. He recently edited an anthology titled, Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point (New York: Seven Stories Press, June 2012). His first book, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land (Seattle: The Mountaineers Books, 2003), has become an influential conservation document. His photographs have been exhibited in more than fifty museums, and will be shown at the 18th Biennale of Sydney in 2012. He has given more than one hundred lectures, including at the United Nations, and Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford Universities. His academic appointments have included Director’s Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Visiting Fellow at Princeton University Forbes College, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fordham University, Visiting Scholar at the University of Utah, and Artist–in–Residence at Dartmouth College. In 2011, he was named a Distinguished Alumni by New Mexico State University. Subhankar received a Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation, a Greenleaf Artist Award from the UN Environment Programme, national conservation awards from the National Wildlife Federation and the Sierra Club, and was named an Arctic Hero by the Alaska Wilderness League.
