Subhankar Banerjee

Banerjee Portrait Subhankar Banerjee founded ClimateStoryTellers.org in August 2010. Subhankar is an Indian born American photographer, writer and activist. Over the past decade he has been a leading international voice on issues of arctic conservation, indigenous human rights and global warming, and over the past five years he has also been focusing on forest deaths from global warming. His photographs and writing have reached tens of millions of people around the world through exhibitions, publications and public lectures.

Subhankar is currently editing an anthology titled Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point (New York: Seven Stories Press, 2012). His blog posts regularly appear in: ClimateStoryTellers.org, AlterNet, Common Dreams, Counter Currents, Huffington Post, TruthOut and YubaNet.

During 2011 his photographs will be shown in a solo exhibition Where I Live I Hope To Know at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth (May 14–August 28), and in group exhibitions Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe (April 8–May 28) and The Altered Landscape at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno (September 24, 2011–February 19, 2012). He will deliver the 2011 Rapaport Lecture in Contemporary Art at Amherst College on March 31, an Artist Talk at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art on June 9, a keynote speech during the Species, Space and Imagination of the Global 2011 biennial conference of The Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (June 21–26) and will participate in a panel during the Art+Environment conference at the Nevada Museum of Art (September 29–October 1).

Subhankar received an inaugural Cultural Freedom Fellowship from Lannan Foundation, an inaugural Greenleaf Artist Award from United Nations Environment Programme, a National Conservation Achievement Award from National Wildlife Federation, a Special Achievement Award from Sierra Club, a Housberg Award from the Alaska Conservation Foundation and was named an Arctic Hero by Alaska Wilderness League on December 6, 2010—50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Subhankar will be Director’s Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and a Fellow at the Forbes College of Princeton University for Fall term 2011. You can visit his personal website by clicking here.
